There are now many groups who teach Lee style T’ai chi this is not a comprehensive list. This list focuses on those who were set up following Chee Soo’s death or groups that have published significant freely available resources that are of use to students. When I produced this list on the old web site it was relatively easy as it was essentially a guide to contact web sites. A number of organisations now prefer to use Facebook as their interface with the external world so providing relevant and up to date referencing is a bit more difficult for some groups.
Perhaps I am biased but I consider Howard Gibbon’s EWTA the best and most comprehensive source of general available resources for Lee Style T’ai Chi and Feng Shou.
East West Taoist Association
Its Chief instructor, Howard Gibbon, was one of Chee Soo’s top students training with him for over 21 years. The Association trains to a high standard and has a well established group of instructors. Based in Holme on Spalding Moore this Association’s work extends across Yorkshire, south to the Midlands and north into Scotland. It is very popular wherever it holds classes and it teaches T’ai chi and Feng Shou. Howard runs a comprehensive online training offer for a monthly subscription. He has has also produced a complete and comprehensive DVD guide to the t’ai chi chuan form (a three DVD set). There is a three volume DVD set of the complete Flying Hands form. He has also produced DVD’s of the first 70 moves of the stick, Sword and Silk forms. The demonstrations are all first class and the multi-viewing angles allow the student to check out exactly how moves and sequences are performed. There is also a useful DVD with a collection of Dao Yin exercises. Howard has also produced DVD’s on various aspects of the Feng Shou. East West Taoist Association – https://howardgibbon.com
Seahorse Books and Taoist Cultural Arts Association
Thanks to the efforts of Chris Simpson Chee Soo’s original books are now back in print and can be obtained through Seahorse books. These are essential reading for any serious student of the Lee Family Arts. We are also indebted to Chris Simpson for ensuring there is a relevant and accurate page on Wikipedia about Lee style T’ai chi. Chris has also managed to find and make available various archive footage and radio interviews with Chee Soo dating from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Chris also runs the Taoist Cultural Arts Association teaching the full range of arts taught by Chee Soo. They mostly run classes in the midlands and South West, but can also be found further afield.
Taoist Arts Association
Chief Instructor Tony Swanson, another of Chee Soo’s top students. Mainly based in London and the south. Has a reputation for high quality teaching and also for training students for international competition. Runs regular workshops at different times of the year in both T’ai chi and Feng Shou
LFIAA Li Style T’ai Chi
Chief Instructor Keith Ewers. Another long time student of Chee Soo, still teaches the Lee Style Arts but now also teaches a range of additional T’ai Chi and Qi Gong styles. Based in Wales and very actively promotes his courses on Facebook.
LiShi T’ai Chi
Another of Chee Soo’s top students is Desmond Murrey. His Association has had a number of names over the years and still appears to be operating with a base in Leeds.
West Yorkshire T’ai Chi
A relatively new group run by long time student Mark Popplewell together with his wife Kate. The group has already made a mark by providing some excellent on-line videos during the recent lock-downs. Mark has also published a book containing an excellent set of Dao Yin exercises with illustrations by Kate.
LFA online
Shelia Dickinson runs a successful group from a base in Hull. She provides an online offer to students and has also produced books and DVDs. Her group focusses on health and well-being rather than martial aspects of the Arts.
